What Is Alashan Agate?
Alashan Agate—also commonly called Alxa Agate—takes its name from the Alxa/Alashan region of Inner Mongolia, China, along the vast Gobi Desert.
Material from this region is largely associated with chalcedony and agate, members of the microcrystalline quartz family, although the broad trade term “Alashan” can encompass stones with somewhat different appearances and mineral compositions.
Scientific study of green Gobi agate from the Alxa region, for example, has identified quartz alongside other minerals such as calcite and celadonite, with iron-bearing celadonite contributing to its beautiful green coloration. The region has undergone hundreds of millions of years of geological activity, helping create the wonderfully varied material found there.
Perhaps the most enchanting part of its story happens after formation.
In portions of the Gobi, stones have been exposed to an extraordinarily harsh desert environment. Wind, blowing sand and extreme temperatures gradually weather their surfaces. Some naturally occurring Gobi agates develop wonderfully smooth, sculptural and sometimes almost otherworldly forms through this process.
Before an artist ever touches the stone, the desert has already begun sculpting it.
A Palette Created by the Earth
One of the reasons we immediately fell in love with Alashan is its COLOR.
Rather than the bold banding people often picture when they hear the word “agate,” much of the material used for today’s little carvings appears in soft, earthy shades:

Agate and chalcedony belong to a much larger and very old tradition of Chinese hardstone carving. For thousands of years, Chinese artisans have carved stones capable of taking a beautiful polish, including agate, chalcedony, quartz and jasper.
During the Qing dynasty in particular, hardstone carving flourished into an extraordinary art form. Skilled lapidaries created miniature figures, animals, plants, vessels and symbolic objects from naturally colorful stones.
One of the most fascinating elements of this tradition is the artist’s ability to work with the stone instead of simply imposing a design upon it.
Variegated agate and chalcedony can contain irregular layers, veins, spots and areas of different opacity. A skilled carver can intentionally position these variations so that a particular color becomes part of the finished artwork—a flower, an animal’s marking, a garment or another tiny detail.
That relationship between stone + artist is part of what makes modern Alashan carvings so irresistible.

Is Alashan Agate Rare?
This question deserves a little nuance.
Alashan Agate as an entire category should not automatically be described as an extremely rare gemstone.
Gobi Desert chalcedony and agate occur in a variety of forms throughout the region. However, particular specimens can be much more unusual and desirable depending on their:

♡ natural patterns
♡ inclusions or “eye” formations
♡ size + quality of usable rough
♡ finished carving quality
Certain beautiful color combinations and especially expressive pieces naturally become more sought after among collectors.
